Volleyball was among the original seven sports that comprised the UMass Boston varsity program when the Beacons joined NCAA competition in 1981.

As a member of the Little East Conference, which began official round robin league play in 1998, UMass Boston faces some of the top regional competition in addition to its challenging nonleague schedule.

The Beacons have qualified for the postseason on two occasions, most recently in 1996 when they advanced to the MAIAW tournament. That year saw the Beacons set a school record for wins with a 16-6 season.
