The men's and women's cross country program has been part of the UMass Boston athletic department since 1981. In that time, the Beacons have evolved to a consistent challenger for regional and national recognition.

In addition to competing in a number of high-level invitational across the area, the Beacons also annually host their signature event, the Codfish Bowl, at the historic Franklin Park course in Boston.

The Beacon cross country program affords the individual an excellent opportunity to achieve personal success. Among the more notable achievements in school history were the the Codfish Bowl championship of Eileen Kelly, and the top-20 national finish of the men's program in 1987.
