Men's Lacrosse
The 2008 Lacrosse team will look to compete for the Little East Conference championship. In 2006, the team made it to the LEC semifinals for the second straight year by defeating UMass Dartmouth and then losing a tough match to conference championship runner-up, Keene State College, 10-7. With the 2006 Little East Coach of the Year patrolling the sidelines and team captains Chris Hanifan, David Libertore and Nick Eaton performing on the field, the Beacons look to improve on the past two years successes.
Past History
In 2004, the Beacons boasted one of the most gifted defenses in the region and have made a mark for themselves in the new century, as evidenced in 2003 when their top offensive player earned Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors and their Head Coach captured LEC Coach of the Year accolades for the second time in three years. As always, UMass Boston will be a contender for the conference title and an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. The squad has qualified for the conference playoffs in every year of play. The 2001 season proved to be a banner year for the UMass Boston Lacrosse Program. The squad finished with a 12-5 overall record and earned it's first ECAC tournament berth in over 20 years, while also competing in the inaugural Little East Conference (LEC) championship game. Five team members were also honored as Little East Conference All-Stars.
The program became a consistent winner in the 1990s, evidenced by a 118-70 record in the past 13 years. The 1993 team set a university record for wins in a season when it finished 11-3, and the 1996 squad bettered that mark with its 12-1 season, while the 2001 team matched that win total with a 12-5 campaign.
The 1996 season was unquestionably the most successful for UMass Boston Lacrosse as the Beacons produced the best record in university history, winning the last 12 games of the season to finish with a 12-1 record. Their .923 winning percentage put UMB fifth among all Division III teams. In addition, the Beacons had the nation's second-ranked defense.
UMass Boston followed up in 1997 by winning it's first 11 games, setting a school record of 23 consecutive wins, leaving the Beacons as the last undefeated team in Division III and one of just two unbeaten squads in all of men's college lacrosse. Their 5-0 divisional record earned the Beacons the Pilgrim Lacrosse League Southeast Division championship and qualified them for the Pilgrim League tournament, the Beacons' first post-season appearance in 15 years.
